Another 10th Anniversary!

As an acknowledgement of the 10th Anniversary of the ABSA affiliated Hurtwood Trek in Surrey, special presentations were made to the four March '98 competitors who also entered the very first Hurtwood Trek all those years ago - Ray Ball, Peter Carroll, Rob Hyden and Reg Osborn, writes Martyn & Dutch Warrell, ABSA Event Organisers.

The event got underway with a pleasant dry day, running over a distance of around three miles. A shorter course than normal, but one that was still quite demanding, surprisingly taking most teams each over thirty minutes to complete.

Over the ten years or so that this event has been staged, it has always been emphasised that it is not a race, the accent being based mainly on control and response of the teams in the special sections, or disciplines, which provide the com-petition on which the points scoring is based. This year many parts of the course itself called for close control and awareness with narrow, twisting, forested trails and sudden changes of terrain and direction which, hopefully, offered mushers and dogs alike a sense of enjoyable challenge.

Starting with a Timed 'feet up' 200 metre Section, slightly uphill from a snubbed Start, the remaining disciplines included a Timed 300 degree Turn, a Stepped Climb, a Timed 'U' Turn, an Observed Section and, for the mushers, an interim Directional Location Test in which only one competitor, Alan Hickmott, was correct.

After the Rally, everyone retired to the Church Hall, only 300yds from the venue, for refreshments supplied and served by Lindsay Dedden and Paul Farrant, in aid of Husky Welfare. This gave us a valuable respite to collate and calculate the final results ready for the presentations there.

Thanks to all who attended and made the day a success, and to Iams UK for all their quality food prizes and support.
