Recently, on BBC Radio 4's "Thought for the Day"
,
Bishop Tom Butler mentioned difficulties encountered when translating
the Bible into the Inuit language. Apparently there are something
like 27 words for snow, reflecting the importance of snow to the Inuit
people. There is, though, no word for joy. This caused some problems,
especially with the passage "There will be much joy in heaven
over one sinner who repents." The Inuit equivalent passage was
"There will be much tail wagging in heaven over one sinner who
repents." |
